A January After-School Art Class for UES & Middle School students

Mondays • January (5th - 26th)
3:45–5:00 PM
Solebury House of Movement & Art (SHoMA)
Ages 9–14

$170 for 4 weeks

This January, we’re awakening the studio after a short winter’s nap for a hands-on clay sculpture series by resounding request from the current students. In this exploratory class, students will work with clay to build both imaginative and functional forms—sculpting animals, people, game pieces, and everyday objects like phone holders, bowls, and trinket trays.

We’ll focus on foundational sculpting skills such as shaping, joining, building armature, and adding surface texture, while encouraging students to follow their own ideas and problem-solve as they build. Some projects may be playful and expressive, others practical and purposeful. All are rooted in learning how to work with clay thoughtfully and confidently. It’s a wonderful reset after the school day and a natural continuation of the drawing and craft classes many students already love.

What we’ll explore:
• Animal & character sculpture
• Simple figurative forms
• Functional objects such as bowls, trays, and phone stands
• Texture, balance, and basic construction techniques

What’s included:
• Clay and basic sculpting tools
• Project storage and drying
• Herbal tea, cocoa, and nut-free snacks

No prior clay experience is necessary. Class size will be limited to keep the atmosphere calm and allow for individual guidance.
