By RSVP only · capped at 9 artisans
SHoMA Open Studio is a process-based creative session for ages 8–16, designed for older kids and teens who want creative autonomy within a calm, well-held space.
This is not a traditional art class. There is no assigned project and no expectation to complete a finished piece. Instead, participants are invited to explore materials freely, follow their own ideas, and work at their own pace. Some may arrive with a clear plan or a work already in progress (WIP). Others may spend time observing, experimenting, or moving between materials before settling in. All approaches are welcome.
Because our first Open Studio falls on Valentine’s Day, we’ll also have a curated table of Victorian-inspired Valentine-making supplies available, in addition to our regular studio materials. Participation in the Valentine materials is completely optional, and students are free to work on any project they choose.
Participants may work with any materials available in the studio, including:
Printmaking: linocut printmaking
Drawing: colored pencils, charcoal, graphite, micron pens, and acrylic markers
Watercolor: multiple student-grade sets & plenty of paper / postcards
Clay Sculpture: sculpture wire and Sculpey clay
Mixed Media: magazines, beads, art papers, washi tape, and collage materials
Fiber Arts: yarn-based crafts, weaving, and crochet
Sound & Performance (optional): a piano and karaoke machine are available for those who feel like getting musical. Headphones available by request.
Students may work in one medium or move between materials during the session.
I will be present throughout Open Studio to support experimentation, offer guidance when needed, and help with creative brainstorming for students who require help getting started. Participants who are already working on a project are welcome to continue that work during Open Studio.
Open Studio is by reservation only and capped at 9 participants to maintain a focused, spacious environment. This format is ideal for students who enjoy independence, curiosity-driven making, and creative exploration without pressure to perform or produce a finished result.
